What is Activation Rate?

Nexa Consultancy | Startup & Finance Glossary

Activation Rate is a key performance indicator that measures the percentage of new users who complete a specific, critical action that signifies they have started to receive the core value of a product. This action is often called the "Aha! moment".

For Startups: Activation is a more meaningful metric than just tracking sign-ups. It helps distinguish between users who are just "kicking the tires" and those who are genuinely engaged. A low activation rate can signal problems with the product's onboarding or its core value proposition.

For SaaS: For a SaaS product, the activation event could be "creating the first project," "inviting a teammate," or "integrating with another app." Improving the activation rate is often the first step in improving long-term retention.

Calculation: Activation Rate = (Number of Users Who Completed a Key Action / Total Number of New Users) * 100

Example: If 1,000 users sign up for a project management tool and 300 of them create their first project within 24 hours, the activation rate is 30%.
