What is Benchmarking?
Nexa Consultancy | Startup & Finance Glossary
Benchmarking is the process of comparing your company's performance metrics and business processes against those of industry bests, top competitors, or recognized standards. The goal is to identify areas for improvement, adopt best practices, and set realistic performance targets.
For Startups: For a startup, benchmarking against other companies in its space is crucial for understanding its competitive position and for communicating with investors. Investors will often ask, "How does your LTV:CAC ratio compare to other SaaS companies at your stage?". A virtual CFO can provide access to industry benchmarks and help interpret the data.
Example: A SaaS startup discovers that its churn rate is 5% monthly, while the industry benchmark for its segment is 2%. This signals a critical problem with product stickiness or customer satisfaction that needs to be addressed immediately.
