What is RACI Matrix?

Nexa Consultancy | Startup & Finance Glossary

A RACI Matrix is a responsibility assignment chart that maps out every task, milestone, or key decision involved in completing a project and assigns which roles are Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed for that item. It is a project management tool used to clarify roles and responsibilities and avoid confusion.

For Startups: In a fast-moving startup environment, using a RACI matrix for key processes like financial closing or compliance filings can bring much-needed clarity. It ensures that everyone on the team knows exactly what is expected of them, preventing tasks from falling through the cracks. A virtual CFO often uses this tool to define the engagement with the startup's internal team.

Example: For the "Monthly GST Filing" task, the internal accountant might be (R)esponsible for preparing the data, while the outsourced vCFO is (A)ccountable for the final accurate filing. The founder is (C)onsulted if there are issues, and the board is (I)nformed once the filing is complete.
