What is SaaS Magic Number?

Nexa Consultancy | Startup & Finance Glossary

The SaaS Magic Number is a metric used to measure the efficiency of a company's sales and marketing spend. It answers the question: for every rupee spent on S&M, how many rupees of new annual recurring revenue are generated?

For Startups: It helps founders and investors understand if and when to increase sales and marketing spend. A Magic Number above 0.75 generally indicates that the GTM strategy is working and it's time to scale investment.

For SaaS: This metric is particularly useful for B2B SaaS companies with a dedicated sales team, as it directly measures the productivity of that investment.

Calculation: Magic Number = (Current Quarter's Revenue - Previous Quarter's Revenue) * 4 / Previous Quarter's S&M Spend

Example: If a company grew revenue by ₹25 Lakhs in a quarter after spending ₹20 Lakhs on S&M, its Magic Number is (25*4)/20 = 5.
