What is Top Line?
Nexa Consultancy | Startup & Finance Glossary
The "Top Line" refers to a company's gross sales or revenue, which is the first line item on an income statement. It represents the total amount of money generated from sales of goods or services before any costs or expenses are deducted.
For Startups: Top-line growth is a primary focus for early-stage startups and their investors. A rapidly growing top line indicates strong market demand and product-market fit. While profitability (the "bottom line") is important in the long run, initial growth is often prioritized to capture market share. In SaaS, the top line is typically measured by Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR).
Example: A company reports a top line of ₹5 Crore for the financial year, indicating its total revenue for that period. All other expenses will be subtracted from this figure to determine the net profit.
